On the coast, the sun is relentless. This St. Augustine Beach home had a patio that took the full force of it, with heat and glare making the space hard to enjoy for much of the day and fading everything the light touched.

We installed a motorized solar screen across the opening. The solar fabric knocks down the sun’s heat and glare while staying see-through, so the family keeps their coastal view and the breeze but loses the harsh light. Because it’s motorized, the screen lowers to shade the space on a bright afternoon and rolls completely out of the way on cooler days or when they want the patio fully open.

A solar screen is the right tool for a beach-side patio because it solves the heat problem without walling the space in. Instead of a permanent, fixed structure, the homeowners get shade exactly when they want it and an unobstructed view the rest of the time, all controlled from a remote.
