A lot of Florida homeowners invest heavily into their outdoor spaces. They build covered patios. They install outdoor kitchens. They buy high-end patio furniture. Some add televisions, lighting, fans, and beautiful landscaping. On paper, the space looks perfect. It feels like the kind of backyard people imagine when they think about Florida living.

Then summer arrives. Suddenly the patio becomes uncomfortable before lunchtime. The afternoon sun turns the entire area into a heat trap. The furniture gets too hot to sit on. Ceiling fans just move warm air around. Even covered patios often feel overwhelming during large parts of the day because the heat still pushes in from the sides. Eventually, homeowners stop using the space nearly as much as they expected.

That frustration is something we hear constantly throughout Jacksonville and Northeast Florida. Many homeowners think the problem is simply “Florida being Florida.” In most cases, it’s not. It’s a solvable problem.

Why covered patios still feel unbearably hot

A roof over a patio blocks direct sun from above, but it does nothing to stop radiant heat and glare coming in from the sides. In the afternoon, when the sun is lower and more direct, the heat pours in horizontally. Reflected heat from concrete and pavers adds to it. The patio becomes an oven with a lid on it.

The other factor is that an open patio has no way to hold cool air in. Whatever brief relief a ceiling fan provides disappears the moment the hot outdoor air replaces it. Shade structures help with direct sun but don’t address the radiant heat from every other direction.

What actually makes a difference

Motorized solar shading screens are the most effective intervention for this problem. A high-quality solar screen fabric, installed on the open sides of a covered patio and lowered during peak heat hours, blocks the radiant heat coming in from the sides while still allowing airflow and visibility to the yard. Studies on solar screen fabric performance show that the right material can block a significant percentage of solar heat gain, which translates directly to a cooler, more comfortable space.

The motorized element matters because Florida heat isn’t consistent throughout the day. Mornings are often comfortable with screens up. Afternoon heat requires screens down on the south and west sides. Evening may be perfect with everything open. A motorized system lets you adjust in seconds with a remote or phone app, rather than manually wrestling with a fixed screen.

The installation details that determine results

Not all solar screen installations deliver the same result. The openness factor of the fabric matters — a very open weave lets in more light but blocks less heat; a tighter weave does the opposite. The right balance depends on the orientation of your patio, how much direct afternoon sun it receives, and whether you prioritize view or temperature control. Edge sealing matters too. A screen that gaps at the corners or doesn’t seat fully into its track lets in the same hot air it’s supposed to block.

At Cheetah Screens, we spend time understanding how homeowners want to use the space before recommending solutions. Some families want to create a more comfortable environment for entertaining. Others want to enjoy outdoor dining without intense glare during the evening. Those details matter because no two homes are exactly the same.
